As I began researching articles about cat food, I found many with authoritative documentation and some with personal opinions. I personally wanted to know what would be the best to feed our mature cat. He has been on dry food since birth with expensive treats and occasionally a few pieces of meat – table scraps – of cooked chicken, beef, tuna, salmon or pork. This may not have been the most correct choice.

Our cat Simba, is strictly an indoor cat. He has always had good health and has a beautiful, glossy, smooth, orange tabby coat. He has starting vomiting a little bit, which appears to be unprocessed dry food or treats, and occasionally hair balls. I will leave the hairballs for another article. In this article I will look at cat food options. I decided to find out what kind of cat food we should get for him or if a dietary change is needed.

In my opinion, it often the ‘cost’ that drives the consumer’s decision on what cat food to purchase, even though our cats are very precious to us. I am sure we want the best food we can afford to give our pet, and what is best for him. In evaluating the issue, I believe that ‘costs’ can be evaluated in two ways.

First, we can get the best from the grocery store. Much of our decision is probably based on the advertising we hear or see through the media, and occasionally from a friend. It is often that we are at the store, cat food is on our list, our selection is on sale, it says it’s ‘natural’ or some other persuasive word on the label, and we place it in our cart with little thought to read the ingredient list. At home, our cat likes it when we feed him the selected food, so we think we have made a good choice.

Second, we can do a lot of research, decide to go to a pet store or make a purchase online for a good quality, high protein cat food, and know from what we have read that it is a good choice, and ‘cost’ didn’t really become the deciding factor. Our cat’s health became the more important issue.

Some cat owners are probably a little on both sides when selecting the cat food; I know I am. Cost is important, but the quality of health our cat enjoys is also very important. We enjoy spoiling our cats, and our cats love to be pampered, so sometimes we supplement our cat’s food with cat treats. Spoiling our cats with treats may not be a good decision either. He may want more because he is not nutritionally satisfied with the cat food we give him. How do we make the right decision?

As with ourselves, we feel better when we eat better, and so will our cats. Let me briefly share with you some information I found it articles that I researched.

1. Whole meats such as chicken, beef, lamb, salmon, etc. vs. cat food with ‘meal’, ‘by-products’, ‘animal digest’, and added sugars. Analysis: Whole meat is best, as you may know. If you really want to know what goes into some inexpensive pet food, and your stomach can stand the information, take the time to read about it on the web. Many of the products put into pet foods should not be ingested by any living thing, and these are products are put into pet food by many large pet food companies.

2. Grain based vs. grain free cat food: Analysis: Cats do not need grains. Most grains are used a fillers in canned cat food and as binding agents in dry cat food. Some manufactures believe that grains will add protein content, which it does, but cats need meat protein, not grain proteins. Some cats may also develop allergies to wheat or corn when added to their food.

3. Cat food with vegetables and fruits: Analysis: Often you can observe that vegetables, such as peas or corn, go right through a cat’s digestive tract without being processed in the intestines. Cats process meat proteins, but not vegetables or fruits.

4. Dry cat food vs. Canned/moist cat food: Analysis: Dry cat food is not natural. It has carbohydrates for fillers, such as grains, to hold it together. The label may indicate that it has high protein content but most of the protein is grain or milk protein, not meat protein. Don’t, however, feel that canned cat food is the only answer because it may also contain fillers including grains, meal, by-products, milk, etc. Several articles suggested that a combination of dry and canned may be the best for your cat.

5. Raw meat vs. high-protein canned cat food: Analysis: I never felt this issue was totally resolved. It has much to do with the individual cat and his owner. Canned food is more convenient and has a longer shelf life, and should be kept refrigerated after it is open. Raw food takes more preparation and has a shorter refrigerated shelf life. You can read discussions on this subject on several cat forums.

6. Grocery store cat food vs. pet store or online high quality cat food: Analysis: I believe that we could all come to the conclusion that a high protein from meat is the better choice, and that product would probably best be purchased at a pet store (which also carry the grocery store brands), or online.

In conclusion, here are a few final thoughts.

* Even thought the cost is higher with a better quality cat food, your cat will eat less because it is a better protein and he is nutritionally satisfied. He won’t eat as much, and he will be less likely to develop liver or other diseases. You, therefore, will have less expensive vet bills, and a happier, healthier cat.

* Read the labels, do research (other than asking friends and listening to or reading ads), and become an educated consumer. Purchase the cat food you feel is best for your cat.

* Consider the age of your cat. A kitten shouldn’t eat the same cat food as your mature cat. The brands will indicate on the label which food is best for your age of cat.

* Introduce any dietary changes slowly, probably over the course of a week or so.

* Research the web, read books, or talk with your vet so you can decide which cat food is best.

All cat foods are not the same. Your cat’s taste buds may like some brands or meats better than others. Purchasing the cat food you feel is best will give you peace of mind by giving him the best cat food you can afford, and he will feel better and more satisfied as he adjusts to his new diet.

One of the ways to get into rabbit farming, is to produce rabbits for the pet market. This though is a risky business because the pet market in one particular area may become saturated. In the U.S., there are an estimated 5 million rabbits being kept as pets, so demand does exist.

The popularity of pet rabbits is because of their cute fluffy appeal, as well as being cheaper to maintain, when compared to other pets like cats and dogs. Also pet rabbits require less maintenance care than other types of pets too.

There are presently 47 breeds of rabbits recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. To name some, there are the American Chinchilla, the American Sable, the Belgian Hare, the Blanc de Hotot, the Britannia Petite, the Himalayan, the Havana, the Mini Rex, the Satin Angora amongst others.

When choosing a pet rabbit, you must consider and understand a few numbers of factors.

Looks and appearances

Like humans, rabbits differ in looks and appearances. As you may have seen, some may have short ears and some may have long ears. Others may come with short-haired coats and some with long-haired coats that requires constant grooming. The color of rabbits also varies. Some may prefer rabbits in a traditional color like the white Dutch or simple black or brown, whereas others may prefer the Black silver Martin with its fine, dark sable coat.

Sizes and weights

Rabbits come in the following breed sizes: Giant, Large, Medium, Small and Dwarf. Some rabbits may range from a few pounds like the Britannia Petite that weigh about 2 ½ pounds (about 1.1 kg) or the Dwarf Hotot, that weigh about 3 pounds (about 1.4 kg), up to the German Gray Giant with a whooping 23 lbs (10.5 kg).

Temperament

Aside from the looks of the animals, you would also need to consider the animals temperament. Do you want a rabbit that just stays quiet all day, like the Rex or one that is more active? Like the Mini Lops, the English Spots or even the Belgian Hare.

Gender

In rabbit production, a doe (female) that is not spayed can become territorial when she reaches maturity. She may nip at you when reaching for her or her food bowl or water dishes. Some does are non-aggressive and some can become territorial towards everybody, but this is rare. If you do not intend to breed your rabbit and you want a doe, it is best to have her spayed to help reduce the chances that she will protect her den.

Bucks present a different problem altogether. Bucks are not generally aggressive. However, spraying can be a problem. Once he reaches maturity he may start to spray urine everywhere to let the world ready that he is ready for a mate! Again not all bucks will do this, and typically if they do it will only be for a short time. This problem can be eliminated by having the buck neutered.

Environment

The environment you plan to keep your rabbit in is also important. Pet rabbits typically should have an indoor pen or cage and a rabbit-safe place to run and exercise, such as an exercise pen, living room or family room. If you don’t plan on letting your pet rabbit stay under the same roof as you do, you could opt to have them live in an easily accessible hutch outside the home. Some pet rabbits live in outside hutches during the day for the benefit of fresh air and natural daylight and are brought inside at night. Before you get a rabbit, the rule of thumb is that you thoroughly investigate and research to know the options available to you. This will help prevent a situation where you procure a rabbit and over a short period of time grow to dislike the animal.

Diet

A pet rabbit’s diet typically consists of unlimited timothy-grass, a small amount of pellets, and a small portion of fresh vegetables. They also need unrestricted access to fresh clean water.

Almost all breeds of domesticated rabbits can be adapted as a pet. Pet breeds include Holland Lop, Polish, Dutch, and Mini Lop.Showing rabbits is an excellent youth development tool and is popular as a 4-H animal.

Whilst rabbit farming for pets is an income generator with limited opportunity, a more stable environment can be found if rabbit farming for meat and skins, or using the angora rabbit for its fur.

Cat Health is a subject close to the mind of most cat owners. We do not like to see our pets suffering and often go to a great deal of effort and expense to keep them fit and healthy. However, just like people a cat can be prone to accidents and mishaps and for that reason it is advisable to have a feline first aid kit available in the house. Just like the first aid kit we keep for general medical emergencies it does not have to be elaborate.

Most of the items found in a human first aid kit can prove useful in a cat emergency although you should be cautious using human remedies for cats as they could be harmful to your pet. Some of the items that you should consider including in a feline first aid kit are:

Olive Oil which can be useful for cleaning out your cats ears and it is also a good treatment should your cat become constipated.

Thermometer. It is best to use a rectal thermometer which should be available either from your vet or local pet store. Before using it make sure that you shake it down so that you get an accurate reading. A cat’s temperature normally should be between 38.3 and 38.9C (1201-102F) and just a little lower for kittens.

Disinfectant A mild disinfectant would be useful and your vet should be able to advise on a suitable one for use on your pet.

Cotton wool, gauze pads and cotton wool buds are also useful items as are a couple of suitable sized bandages.

Cats are prone to bite sand scratches and a useful addition to your first aid kit would be a tube of an antiseptic cream formulated for cats.

In addition a pair of round ended scissors and a pair of tweezers to remove any kind of splinters would more or less complete the basic cat first aid kit. However, to avoid infecting yourself whilst treating your cat you might like to add a pair of thick gloves to the kit to avoid being scratched whilst treating your cat.

One final consideration is that if your cat becomes suddenly sick or injured you will need to get them to a vet as soon as possible. Therefore, you should make sure that you have a suitable carrier in which to transport your cat.

It is always hoped that you will not need your feline first aid kit but it is always better to be prepared just in case.

Some families love their pets and hence find it very difficult to go on tours and trips without the pet. Most of them consider their pets as part of the family. Pets, too, being very close to their masters cannot adjust with other families and hence some of them stop eating and lose their enthusiasm if they don’t see their masters for more than a day or too. This is one reason why many vacation places have pet friendly vacation rentals which permit families to carry their pets along with them and spend a vacation for a week or two in a rental home.

Such homes have all the amenities that a modern, comfortable house should have. In addition to that they allow pets. A good example is the Outer Banks of North Carolina where there are many rental homes in Hatteras realty. However, such pet friendly rental homes have a few rules to ensure pets do not bring discomfort to other people out to enjoy their vacation. Some of these rental homes charge an extra hundred dollars or so for the pet, which is non-refundable. Even after that, they reserve the rights to ask a tenant to vacate the rental vacation home if their pet is found in non-pet zones of the hotels.

A dog is a man’s best friend. A saying very true about our canine companions, but not necessarily limited to dogs. Cats, too, are a favorite among many of the pet lovers around the world. Owning pets is actually welcoming them home, and taking them in as a part of our family like any other family members. Just as we care about our family members, don’t we all want to keep our pets hale and hearty? Well, the health of our pets is very important and a big responsibility for us since their well-being is completely dependent on us. You can prevent, postpone, or minimize pet health problems, and further improve your pets’ health by introducing special supplements in your pets’ food. Just like we humans need a balanced diet with exact proportions of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates, our pets too need nutrition as per their genetic makeup, and daily activities. Of course, this differs across species.

Being a dog trainer by hobby, I take keen interest in what people feed their pets. For pets, I prefer (and regularly advise people) to introduce supplements into their daily pet food as it is very important for pets like dogs and cats. As, our pets are not accustomed to eating foods we prepare for ourselves and when, we in our love for them, share certain eatables, it does affect their overall physical well-being. Say, for instance, dogs get affected, and may start shedding hair or may feel run out of energy. Pet health care requires us to closely monitor what our kids, too, share with our pets, such as chocolates, candies, chips, etc. Special pet care food such as dog food and dog treats, for different species of dogs, and even cat food with additional nutritional supplements are now available at various online shops. What we all need to understand is pets too need our constant attention and love that keeps them happy, just as they always bring a smile on our face when we walk in through the front door. In fact, you can just go in for pet training for dogs, and even dress your favorite pet in colorful, designer pet costumes.

George is a pet dog trainer by choice, as it has been his favorite hobby since high school days. He has been a pet dog trainer since the past 6 years, and has trained a wide breed of dogs. This passion also got him interested in, and working upon providing nutritional advice to pet owners – be it a dog or a cat owner.

According to APOP, the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 54% of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese. That’s approximately 93 million US dogs and cats that need to get moving! Simply put, this makes me sad. We live in a world where nutrition and exercise is taking a back seat. Obesity in adults, kids and pets is rising rapidly. I’m not going to lecture on eating right and exercising, but it is definitely relevant. The trend seems to have happened like this. First, our health slowly took a back seat, then our children pick up our bad habits and now the pets in the home are getting overweight.

I know it’s difficult to find the time to run with our dogs, but it is our responsibility. Most breeds need quite a bit of exercise and stimulation. They need to run, not just walk, and they need challenges to overcome to tire them out physically and mentally in order to be healthy. Cats can even be encouraged to exercise more with toys and games. The one key ingredient these animals are missing is you. You can always hire a dog runner, not just a walker, but someone who can do short bursts of running with your pet to actually drain his energy. Also, it needs to be someone who knows about breeds and pet first aid to make sure your dog is in good hands. The benefits of exercise are endless and practically the same for dogs and cats as humans. The most important being the fact that it helps prevent extra weight. Extra fat puts your loved ones at greater risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, joint and skeletal disorders, and early death. Regular activity tones muscles, builds strong bones, improves circulation, and lifts spirits by increasing ‘feel good’ chemical levels in the body. Dogs are not okay being in a yard all day because he doesn’t run laps as you might think. He waits for you to get home for stimulation. Fit dogs, just like fit humans, feel better, and sleep better. This makes happier people and pets with fewer medical expenses.

The next step is the food they eat. Every animal is different just like people. For example, some dogs benefit from being fed scrambled eggs and others can’t handle it because there stomach is too sensitive. Think about this when choosing your dog and cat food. Is your pet getting enough nutrients? Is your pet food too high in fat? Does your pet need a supplement? All these questions can be answered by a vet. I also suggest cutting out people food for a while and looking into organic and/or low fat treats. Get treats that are very soft and squishy so you can break them up into tiny pieces. Trust me, your pet doesn’t care how big the treat is, just that he gets one. This way your pet doesn’t feel deprived and you can still fulfill your urge to give it to him because he deserves it on cuteness alone. I understand how it is. Sometimes when I’m cooking, all it takes is a cute little turn of the head and before even thinking about it I’m feeding my dogs part of my dinner. But it is a bad habit. Even if it’s their favorite food. Everything is there favorite! I once knew a woman who gave her cat chocolate milk everyday even though it made the cat ill. She said she couldn’t help it because it was Fluffy’s favorite. Please don’t be that person. Next time you feel the urge to feed Fido from the table, grab a squeaky toy or yarn ball and toss it for them to play with. You should feel better thinking about the fact that they will live longer and happier lives, bring you more companionship by being a healthy weight.

It seems there are always things happening to keep us from going outside to run our dogs. That shouldn’t stop you from other activities that can stimulate your pet. Cats are easy, cut back on their food and extra treats then swing something fuzzy around till they are bored. There are even tricks you can teach your cat, just google it to learn how.

Dogs are more involved. They still need their exercise as you do, so take turns on the treadmill when the weather is bad outside. Do intervals with your pet. For example, start with a warm up and to two minutes running hard or at an incline with one minute of rest. Hop off and put the pooch on for a bit while you do twenty crunches, twenty jumping jacks, push ups, squats, etc. Then hop back on the treadmill for two or three more intervals. You hop off and repeat the floor routine while the Fido is jogging. Repeat as many times as you like and this is just to give you an idea to think outside of the box. If you want to watch a television show then put the treadmill next to the couch and watch it while Fido works out. Make sure he is always supervised. Some dogs quickly take to it and others need encouragement and guidance. There are also fun dog games you can play in the house to drain energy like the ‘find it’ game. You can also work on obedience in the house. Teaching something new or refining skills in the house where its a controlled environment is perfect. This way your pet will have less distractions and can’t run while practicing off leash techniques. Always be looking for ways to exercise your pet in your area. There are always hikes, marathons with dogs, agility classes and more to look for.

After reading this article I can trust that you have been influenced and will spend more time exercising your pet. Take care of you, your family and your canine kids.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, American pet owners spent nearly $22.45 billion on vet care, over-the-counter pet medicines and pet supplies in 2009. Pet medications are becoming expensive day by day. However, you can save lot of money and time by purchasing online pet medications.

While it is important to consult a veterinarian to diagnose your pet’s problems and to give you a prescription, you no longer need to travel great distances or pay high prices for pet medications. Online pet pharmacies come to the rescue in such cases, helping you get all the medication right at your doorstep, without needing to leave your house, except to visit the veterinarian.

Tips on Buying Online Pet Medications

Websites providing online pet medications usually offer both over-the-counter and prescription medicines. Also, they offer medical supplies for pets suffering from chronic illness or having special needs. In addition, they offer a wide range of pet products and animal foods. Online pet pharmacies are associated with a large number of expert vets, who offer assistance to pet owners.

Here are few tips for buying online pet medications:

1. Get a written prescription from your pet’s veterinarian for the medication. This is required to buy prescription medicines and other prescription-only items via the internet.

2. It is preferable to store some supplies to avoid extra charges of expedite shipping.

3. Compare the rates offered by various online pet medication pharmacies. Some popular websites may offer discounts. Further, lesser known websites usually have more competitive rates.

4. Remember to check the charges for shipping. The website may offer cheaper medication but have high shipping costs.

5. Once you have chosen a website you may undertake the usual online ordering process. You can add the desired medicine to your shopping cart.

6. Make an online payment by using credit card or PayPal.

7. You will receive a fax number and a customer order number. Fax the prescription to the pharmacy along with the order number.

8. Once the medication arrives, compare it with the original prescription. Also, check the dosage information. Consult a vet, in case of any confusion.

9. Keep your order number handy to place future orders.

Pets are a part of our families. But what do you do with them when you go out of town and can’t take them with you?

The old option was to drive them to a boarding facility. This takes time, energy and costs a lot of money. Not to mention that you can only pick your pets up during business hours!

Today, there are better options to boarding!

Professional pet sitting offers an affordable, safe in-home alternative! Pets are less stressed and happier when they get to stay home. The comfort, security and smells of their own surroundings ease the stress of owner absence.

Pet sitters can work with any budget. Owners get to pick how many times a day they want their pets visited, and for how long!

Journals are left by the pet sitters to tell owners about what happened during the visits, which includes how well the pets ate, funny stories, any abnormal behaviors, etc. They also can text/picture message or call owners with updates about their pets.

Pet sitters also provide security for your home. Instead of a dark empty house that is an easy target, your home is lived in. The trash bins are taken to the curb, mail and newspapers are brought in, lights and blinds rotated! No one will know you are away!

With a professional pet sitter you will have confidence in your pet sitter and know that your home and pets are being taken care of by the best!
